Laughlin Desert Challenge Report
Phoenix Racing Team had a very good weekend at the recent Laughlin
Desert Challenge off-road race. We finished 5th overall out of 24 trucks
entered and 9th overall out of 187 vehicles entered. Roger set an excellent driving pace that kept us up
near the front both days as well as saving the equipmentmany of our
competitors overdrove their vehicles and ended up breaking
something.
Friday we took the truck through
Contingency and Technical inspection, passing both with flying colors and
getting many comments on how great the vehicle looked.
At the Laughlin race two vehicles start together every 30 seconds. On
Saturday, when the green flag dropped, we quickly pulled away from our
competitor, thanks to our Goodyear MTR tires, Tom Scahill engine and Sunoco
race fuel. Roger drove a flawless race and when the checkered flag fell we were
in sixth position, having beaten 18 of our competitors. Other than a little
work on the rear end the truck was ready to take on the challengers again
Sunday.
The top 10 finishers from
Saturday re-drew for starting positions on Sunday and we drew #3, second row on
the inside line for the first turn. Once again, when the green flag dropped,
Roger was charging hard and we ran side by side all the way to the first turn.
Since we had the inside line the advantage was ours and even though we traded
paint with our competitor, we were first through and never looked back. Sunday
was almost a repeat of Saturday; Roger drove a flawless race and when the dust
had settled at the finish we were the third truck across the line. Our combined
finishes for both days put us in 5th place and in the money as well as 9th
place overall.
We wish to thank all our
sponsors who support the team: John Bekakis of Beko Radiator; Borla Exhaust
Systems; Danny Darcy at Drive Line Service of San Jose; John Dark of Globalstar
Satellite Phones; Jim Alexander and Joe Aquirre of Goodyear Tire; Fred Snow of
Hella Lights; Redline Racing Oil, Art, Lauren and Kerry of Sunoco Race Fuels;
Wes Harris of Wesco Performance; and Tom Scahill of Tom Scahill Race Engines.
